Damanhur is a federation of artistic and spiritual communities settled in Valchiusella, the foothills of the Italian Alps, overlooking Turin,. The people of Damanhur have managed to develop a way of life, with creative, philosophical, environmental and social aspects in balanced measure.

The Damanhurian School is now in its 14th year. It began as a primary school, then over the years it expanded to cover all the other age groups, from nursery to middle school. The school is currently attended by approximately 70 children from the communities and by several children of non-residents. The curriculum aims to awaken individual potential, supporting growth and uniquely original expression. Art is a fundamental part of the learning process of young people at Damanhur, supported by the many artists in the communities. The present day scholastic approach has the following characteristics:

  1. Tutor - has the job of teaching, and also learning with the pupils, creating a suitable emotional environment within the class.
  2. Groups of a maximum of 7-8 children. Such small groups allow children to build strong relationships with each other and to have individually planned tuition.
  3. Groups are formed by children of varying ages, in order to encourage collaboration between those of differing abilities and thus diminishing aggressive tendencies and competitive behaviour, commonplace within single age groupings.
  4. Working and studying for projects, where teaching objectives have practical experience as a starting point, and stimulus is provided by the pupils themselves; where pleasure is used as a road of discovery and as a new way of learning.
  5. Dynamic planning using travel as a tool - small educational groups afford a physical mobility that enriches the learning experience in chosen subject areas and planned projects.
  6. Co-operation with parents - creating strong educational links between the school and family, with parents collaborate in the school's management.
  7. School follows the rhythm of life, with short breaks to mark the seasons; the summer time, is the time for pupils to learn to enjoy themselves. School should be like life, full of discovery and continuous change.

The school is open to children from all over the world. As well as Italian children the school is presently attended by French, English, and German children on a full time basis. It is regarded as essential to compare and exchange ideas with other types of schools and with others involved in educational research and experimentation. The presence of different nationalities and cultures enriches the school, broadening the perspective of both children and adults, as well as helping in the acquisition of foreign languages.
